Britannica Concise Encyclopedia: Christchurch
City (pop., 2006: 360,768), South Island, New Zealand. Founded in 1850 as a model Church of England settlement, it was the last and most successful colonizing project inspired by Edward Gibbon Wakefield and his New Zealand Co. It is the country's second largest city and an important industrial centre; its port is Lyttelton. Called the "Garden City of the Plains" for its numerous parks and gardens, it is home to the University of Canterbury, Christ's College, and Lincoln University.
A patent can be used to prevent others from making, using, selling or importing a particular invention, without permission, for which a license fee can be charged, if desired. Protection can usually last up to 20 years from date of filing, with exceptions for things like ornamental designs or plants, assuming the on-going fees are paid.
Term Batavia is the Latin name for the land of the Batavians during Roman time. This was roughly the area around the city of Nijmegen within the Roman Empire. The remainder of this land is nowadays known as Betuwe. During the Renaissance, Dutch historians tried to promote these Batavians wrongly to the status of 'archfathers' of the Dutch people. They started to call themselves Batavians, later resulting in the Batavian Republic, and took this to their colonies like Indonesia (Jakarta), Suriname (Batavia, Suriname), and in the United States, around Nieuw Amsterdam (now called New York), you'll find Batavia (city), New York. The origin, however, remains Betuwe.
